Martyr, and less glorious titles

I felt it was too irreverent to put all this in the first post, so... have you ever wondered why, out of all the many Christians who were martyred, St. Justin alone was given the title of "Martyr"? Would you like to know how that happened?

Yeah, so would I. But anyway, he wears the name well. "Martyr" originally meant "witness", and St. Justin certainly was an important witness to Christianity in those early years and an important witness to us today of what early Christians were like. I don't know what you could call me. St. Rachel Introvert or something. Rachel the Blogging Procrastinator.

They say if only Judas hadn't hanged himself in prideful despair, if only he'd gone back to Jesus and asked His forgiveness, we'd be building churches named St. Judas the Penitent.

Hey, it's better than Æthelred the Unready. Know what he wasn't ready for? Turns out it was all a mistranslation.

Now I'm thinking of Barnabas the Barmy. And Rabadash the Ridiculous:

"The bolt of Tash falls from above!"
"Does it ever get caught on a hook half way?"
.

I guess the penitence is what separates Judas from Peter.

Exactly. And us from Judas, hopefully.
