Friars on Facebook

I think it is cool and quite appropriate that when priests and nuns and other vowed religious fill out profiles on Facebook, they don't list their relationship status as "single", "married", "dating", or any of the usual categories, but rather they make use of that famous classification, "It's Complicated." You'd almost think Facebook came up with that category with them in mind! Almost.

For that matter, all Christians should put "it's complicated" because we're all the bride of Christ, and if we're in a relationship with another human being it sounds a bit sketch to say you're married and dating someone...and for those of us who are single, we're engage and single at the same time...

I think the more curious topic is, when does Facebook become "complicated"; i.e. when does it become inappropriate for priests, nuns and other religious to have a Facebook page to worry about in addition to the endless cares that their vowed lives present them? Avoiding scandal, in my opinion, trumps "being relevant." I think this is a topic that religious and priests with Facebook and/or other social sites should prayerfully consider...

I don't think Facebook gives scandal. It can be a time-saving way to keep in touch with many friends at once. It's just another internet portal, like email or a blog, that can be good or bad depending on how it's used.
